WELCOME TO MY PRACTICE
LISA SHEEHAN PH.D.
“Imperfections are not inadequacies; they are reminders that we're all in this together.”
― Brené Brown

MY APPROACH TO THERAPY
Courage, Connection and Compassion are three components Brene Brown identifies as the basis for "Wholehearted Living". I believe they are also key ingredients in therapy. The building of a compassionate connection is essential to instill the courage to work on the challenges of life that we all face. In my work, I integrate a variety of evidenced-informed psychological treatment approaches tailored to meet the individual needs of each client. However, I tend to draw heavily from cognitive behavioral, acceptance and commitment therapy, and family/systems based approaches. I find that these frameworks are helpful in terms of providing a structure to better understand current challenges and to create a plan for managing these challenges more effectively. However, I believe that the application of specific therapeutic interventions and strategies is not enough for therapy to truly be effective. I place primary importance on cultivating a respectful, supportive, collaborative, relationship in order to better understand a client's experiences and to determine together how to best proceed toward healthier functioning and well-being. Additionally, helping clients to recognize and access their personal strengths and competencies is a large part of this process. Finally, my family/systems background has instilled an appreciation of the importance of having parents actively involved when working with children and the need to gather input from other relevant sources in a client’s life (e.g., schools, physicians, psychiatrists) when appropriate to gain a more comprehensive understanding of their current situation.

ABOUT ME
I have experience serving children, adolescents, adults and families as a licensed psychologist since 1998. I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from the University of Delaware and earned my Masters and Doctoral degrees from Bryn Mawr College.
As a clinical psychologist, I have provided mental health services in a variety of settings including community mental health centers, independent and special education school settings, and private practice. As a result, I have had the opportunity to work with individuals presenting with a wide range of concerns related to learning disabilities, problems with emotional and behavioral regulation (e.g., anxiety, depression, ADHD, high functioning Autism Spectrum), and difficulties in social relationships. While I enjoy working with individuals with a wide variety of presenting issues, I have a special interest in working with individuals experiencing anxiety-related symptoms across the life span including selective mutism and OCD.
Additionally, I have specialized training and am committed to supporting individuals experiencing challenges related to Postpartum Adjustment and Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders as well as Perinatal Loss (miscarriage, elective pregnancy termination, and termination for medical reasons).
On the personal side, I have a strong connection to the Baltimore community where I was born and raised. At home, I enjoy spending time with my husband and three growing and grown children along with our lovable Labrador and feisty kitty.
